Highwoods G.C - Local Rules - “Preferred Lies”

Preferred Lies effective from 02/10/24

Competitions will remain qualifying until further notice.

Preferred lies on all grass cut to fairway length or below.

SUMMARY:
PREFERRED LIES on grass cut to fairway length (or through the green when Temporary Local Winter Rules are in place). The ball may be cleaned and PLACED within 6 inches.

PREFERRED LIES
When a player’s ball lies in a part of the general area cut to fairway height or less, the player may take free relief once by placing the original ball or another ball in and playing it from this relief area:
Reference Point: Spot of the original ball
Size of Relief Area Measured from Reference Point: 6 inches from the reference point, but with these limits:

• Limits on Location of Relief Area:
• Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point, and
• Must be in the general area.
In proceeding under this Local Rule, the player must choose a spot to place the ball and use the procedures for replacing a ball under Rules 14.2b(2) and 14.2e.

RELIEF FROM EMBEDDED BALL
In the General Play area, a ball which is embedded in it own pitch mark, other than in a penalty area, may without penalty be lifted cleaned and dropped as near as possible to where it lay not nearer the hole.

Exception: A player may not obtain relief under the local rule if it is clearly unreasonable to play a stroke because of interference by anything other than the condition, i.e. under a tree or bush where a usual stance or swing cannot be taken. Penalty for breach of local rule: Match Play – Loss of hole; Stroke Play – Two Strokes

ANIMAL DAMAGE
In the general area, areas of damage caused by any animal are treated as ground under repair from which relief is allowed under Rule 16.1b. (Sub Rule F10) One club length from the nearest point of relief not nearer the hole

FLOODED BUNKERS

Designated bunkers from which relief may be taken when fully flooded without penalty
The following are designated Bunkers,
2nd left greenside.
3rd left greenside.
4th left fairway & 4th front left greenside.
7th both left greenside.
8th left greenside.
10th right green side
11th right greenside

These bunkers are out of play, GUR, when fully flooded and no relief is available within the bunker. Rule 16.1b (sub rule F16)

All other bunkers on the course whether they contain temporary water or not, are still bunkers for all purposes under the Rules
